Configuring Name Servers

When setting up your website, one of the crucial steps is configuring the name servers for your domain. This ensures that your domain name points to your web hosting account. In this article, we will guide you through the process of configuring name servers for your domain and also provide instructions for some of the most common domain providers.

Understanding Name Servers

Name servers are responsible for translating your domain name into an IP address, which browsers use to load your website. For our hosting service, you will use the following name servers:

  • ns1.peakhost.co
  • ns2.peakhost.co

DNS Propagation Time

Once you have configured your name servers and A records, it is important to understand that these changes are not instantaneous. DNS propagation can take anywhere from 24 to 48 hours to complete. During this period, the updated DNS information is being distributed across the internet, reaching all the various DNS servers worldwide.

What to Expect During Propagation

  • Intermittent Access: During propagation, some users may be able to access your website while others cannot. This is because different DNS servers around the world update at different times.
  • Temporary Downtime: It is possible that your website may experience temporary downtime or appear unavailable in certain regions during this period.
  • Patience is Key: Unfortunately, there is no way to speed up the propagation process. It is a natural part of updating DNS records and applies to all domain changes.

How to Check Propagation Status

You can use online tools such as DNS Checker (dnschecker.org) or IntoDNS (intodns.com) to monitor the propagation status of your domain. These tools allow you to see the DNS records from different locations around the world, giving you an idea of how far along the propagation process is, as well as if the configuration is valid.
